Kiplimo Sets World Record at 35th EDP Lisbon Half Marathon
Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo broke the men’s half marathon world record at the 35th edition of the EDP Lisbon Half Marathon on Sunday, March 8, clocking 57:20 to win the race and shave ten seconds off the previous official world’s best time. Notabely, its the fifth sub-58 time for Kiplimo to the date.
In women’s race, Ethiopia’s Tsigie Gebreselama won for the second consecutive year with 1:04:48. Kenya’s Janeth Chepngetich (1:06:50) and Regina Wambui (1:07:10) completed the women’s podium.
The event doubled as the Portuguese national half marathon championship. Samuel Barata finished 12th overall in 1:00:36 to claim the men’s national title second time in a row, with Rui Pinto (1:03:10) and Duarte Gomes (1:03:22) completing the top 3. I
n women’s race, Mariana Machado won her debut half marathon claiming the national title in 1:10:10, with Susana Santos (1:11:34) and Mónica Silva (1:14:00) finishing second and third among Portuguese athletes.
The event was organised by Maratona Clube de Portugal and attracted more than 30,000 registered participants. For the 2026 edition, organisers introduced a lottery-based registration system for the first time. Alongside the main race, the Vodafone 10K took place, with Hermano Ferreira and Marta Castro winning the race and Hyundai 7k walking event with Natanael Guerreiro and Rafaela Gonçalves taking the win.
EDP Lisbon Half Marathon is organized by Maratona Clube de Portugal and remains the biggest race of Portugal and only member of Super Half series from the country. The dates for the 2027 event are yet to be revealed.
