Sporting CP pulls off historic comeback to reach Champions League Quarter-Finals
Sporting CP produced one of the most stunning comebacks in Champions League history to reach the quarter-finals. In the first leg, the Portuguese side was swept 3-0 in by Bodø/Glimt, leaving their way in play-offs seemingly over.
But at Estadio Jose Alvalade, Sporting delivered a breathtaking performance. Goncalo Inacio headed in from a corner in the 34th minute, Pedro Goncalves doubled the lead after a clever pass from Suarez, and Suarez himself levelled the tie from the penalty spot in the 78th minute. In extra time, Maxi Araujo and Rafael Nel completed a 5-0 win on the night.
Sporting became one of the few clubs in history to comeback a three-goal first-leg deficit in Champions League play-offs. The victory also ended a 43-year wait for a European quarter-final, with their last appearance coming in the 1982/83 season.
Next up for Sporting is Arsenal. The first leg takes place on April 7 in Lisbon, with the return fixture at the Emirates on April 15.
