Vuelta a España 2024
On August 17, 2024, the 79th edition of the Vuelta a España got underway with an individual time trial in Lisbon, Portugal, marking the first of 21 stages across three weeks of racing. The 12 km route between Lisbon and Oeiras combined technical corners with fast straights, offering an early test for general classification contenders.
American rider Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates) claimed victory in Stage 1, setting the fastest time and taking the first red jersey of the race. He finished ahead of Mathias Vacek (Lidl–Trek), while Wout van Aert delivered a strong performance to secure third. McNulty’s win was not only his first at a Grand Tour stage but also positioned him as the early leader in the general classification.
The 2024 Vuelta a España runs from August 17 to September 8, covering Spain’s dramatic terrain, from steep mountain climbs to explosive sprint finishes. Traditionally the final Grand Tour of the cycling season, the race has built its reputation on demanding mountain stages and unpredictable twists. Starting outside Spain continues the Vuelta’s practice of international openings, with Lisbon joining a list of cities that have hosted the prestigious start.
